Built in 1886, the White Hart Hotel is the dominant feature of what is now New Plymouths West End Precinct a city block filled mainly with gustatory treats.
Set on a corner, the White Harts splendid Victorian façade of timbered walls, ornate windows and bullnose veranda, topped off by a statue of a white stag, is both eye-catching and elegant.

The hardest thing about the West End Precinct is deciding what to eat.

Inside, a glass-roofed courtyard is surrounded by a range of eateries, each run by dedicated enthusiasts and catering to every whim, taste and appetite.

Why go?

Because its former notoriety as an occasional den of iniquity has now morphed into well-deserved architectural and culinary fame. Although the White Hart is no longer a hotel, you can still stay, in artily boutique splendour, right next door in the adjoining King and Queen Hotel Suites. They offer a range of accommodation from uncluttered modern rooms to elaborate suites.

The West End Precinct is modern, elegant and absorbing.

Then youve got all those temptations right next door in the Precinct. When you have chosen your treat among the options are properly Italian pizza, Asian fusion sushi, classic meat and veg, or doughnuts, pastries, gelato, plus coffee, craft beers and wine you can sit in the bright and busy courtyard and enjoy the vibe. Insider tip

While you relax in the Precincts pleasant surroundings, take a moment to reflect on the horror of that night in 1893 when Robert Wallath, in his highwayman costume of mask, military uniform and long sword, threatened the barman at the White Hart with a pistol, demanded money and then, clutching a bottle of whisky, rode away on his horse.

On the way/nearby

You cant miss the strikingly rippled, reflective walls of the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery and Len Lye Centre right across the road, and nor should you. Pop inside for some emphatic modern art and to be mesmerised by Len Lyes kinetic sculptures. Be sure to allow enough time to enjoy it all.

The Coastal Walkway is just one of New Plymouth's delights.

Then go for a wander to discover some of the colourful street art tucked around the city streets. Puke Ariki is nearby too a well-presented museum where quirky exhibits engage your attention, and youll learn more than you realise about all sorts of things, including Taranakis proud history of DIY. Did you know New Zealands first farm bike was built here? And so was a device for practising brass instruments quietly.

Combine appreciation of art and nature on the Coastal Walkway, where Len Lyes hypnotic Wind Wand is just one of the installations but note that the famously photogenic Te Rewa Rewa Bridge is currently being renovated.

Puke Ariki educates and entertains in equal measure.

You could go to Pukekura Gardens for more conventional, but equally lovely, outdoor delights that include the pretty and photogenic Poets Bridge, with its unexpected racehorse connection.

How much?

Free to wander the precinct, but you wont be able to resist stopping for something to eat or drink, so you can soak up the atmosphere.

Best time to go

When youre hungry.
